गढ़वाली बोली का क्षेत्र प्रधान रूप से गढ़वाल में होने के कारण यह नाम पड़ा है। पहले इस क्षेत्र के नाम केदारखंड, उत्तराखंड आदि थे। यहाँ बहुत से गढ़ों के कारण, मध्ययुग में लोग इसे ‘गढ़वाल‘ कहने लगे।

गढ़वाली: गढ़वाल मंडल के सातों​ जिले पौड़ी, टिहरी, चमोली, रुद्रप्रयाग, उत्तरकाशी, देहरादून और हरिद्वार गढ़वाली भाषी लोगों के मुख्य क्षेत्र हैं। कुमांऊ के रामनगर क्षेत्र में गढ़वाली का असर देखा जाता है। माना जाता है कि गढ़वाली आर्य भाषाओं के साथ ही विकसित हुई लेकिन 11—12वीं सदी में इसने अपना अलग स्वरूप धारण कर लिया था।
